Jan Kelly has three passions that are her primary business focus:
- Mentoring individual leadership capability
- Values Coach: Assisting the executive team to build a company-wide brand and reputation that is value driven and customer focused
- Facilitating partnering relationships, internally and externally, that allows all stakeholders to achieve success and sustainable growth
To achieve the above, Jan mentors executive teams in sound business acumen, healthy group dynamics and successful partnering principles. As a psychologist, she wants to assist leaders to develop personally tailored strategies, so they feel more in control, as they navigate their daily challenges. This will include personal confidence, as well as relationship and communication skills. Jan also facilitates company boards to prepare their corporate vision and values, then assist the leadership team to translate this into tangible objectives. She also loves analysing contemporary world’s best business practice. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, Jan believes we can model successful initiatives, to fast-track our own leadership potential.
For Jan, establishing and strengthening connections between individuals inside a team, or between companies to form a partnering network, still remains the most powerful and exciting way to conduct our business. Strong relationships are all-important if we wish to create a robust, thriving business.

In these contexts, she wants to deliver relevant, innovative initiatives that allow teams and individuals to enhance their performance, build collaborative relationships and develop a thriving workplace culture. It is also imperative that the work is completed thoroughly, so that the necessary changes remain in place.
Jan Kelly’s Personal Business Values and Guiding Principles
Jan believes that identifying our core business principles allows us to clarify how we will conduct business with our colleagues and customers. This builds our reputation and assists us to control our personal brand. Below are her core values and guiding business principles. This is what matters to her, in doing business. A good day is mostly getting this right!
1. Sustainability
Know the difference between a king and a pawn (David Ogilvy)
Have a heightened awareness of what really matters for the long-term. Conversations and priorities should be about your business brand and personal reputation. These are your ‘Kings and Queens’. Don’t be distracted by the Pawns. Focus energy on future growth opportunities, not past failures. Not-negotiable integrity is the King. Give away the Pawns (red herrings), but never give away your King!

2. Passion
Rust never sleeps (Neil Young)
Inspire others with personal conviction and generosity. Let nothing that undermines your vision slip through to the Keeper. Cynical one-liners (Persecutor, Victim & Rescuer) damage relationships. They also chip away at your reputation. Have a heightened awareness for group values and communication dynamics. Successful partnerships are never based on dominance and submissiveness. Your role: Assist others to feel bigger for longer.

Functional Dynamics (Explorer, Builder & Encourager)

3. Performance
Track record is everything (Warren Buffet, Berkshire Hathaway)
Destiny is determined by your daily agenda. You are how you spend your time! Once you are clear on your vision and values, you have a greater sense of purpose. Daily decisions then become simple. ‘Maximum strategic gain’ requires a laser beam focus on where you can have the greatest impact. Transparency and genuine openness will identify mistakes quickly. I’d rather an imperfect idea be implemented by passionate people, than implement the perfect idea by people who don’t care!
Relevant Business Model:
Sustainable Value

4. Personal Accountability
Start with one (David Suzuki)
Being in a team is not a right. It is a privilege. We earn our stripes to stay in the group by value adding positive energy. Do not passively wait to be entertained. Don’t be the one who constantly provides the negative counter-example. You become exhausting to be with! Seek learning rather than expecting others to supply the questions and answers. Don’t defend territory that is not worth defending. We do this by covering our mistakes, blaming others or passing-the-buck. If things are not working, ask “How did I contribute to this?” Don’t criticize unless you can come up with something better!

"Smorgon and Baulderstone have been engaged in a partnering relationship since mid-2005, facilitated by Jan Kelly. Jan has been facilitating change, developing partnering relationships and mentoring individuals. Jan’s energy, drive and enthusiasm have ensured the Smorgon/Baulderstone Better Business Group has performed as a high performance group. Jan led a critical mass of our people through a journey to better understand the value of working together. We have seen much value in the proces, from an individual level to a corporate level".

"We entered into a partnering process with a major customer. Our objective was broad; to develop a better way of doing business together. While our respective company values were aligned and while our people were committed, we did not have a way forward, a roadmap which could provide the process of developing a unique partnership model. The pathway was provided by Jan Kelly. I would thoroughly recommend Jan (and PIPs) to any company who feels ready to take the leap from pure transactional relationships to ones based on mutual benefit and trust. The success we have had is qualitative and real and is due to a great part to Jan’s work with us".

"Jan Kelly has assisted me in changing ingrained cultural issues that were preventing Jeans West from reaching its potential. Jan has worked with myself and the senior leadership team, our Product and Planning team and our Store Management team. These are our most crucial teams. As a result we have energized the business, culturally and financially. Jan has the ability to break through practices and attitudes which seemed intractable. This has worked at all levels of the business and continues today".

Personal Brand Exercise: Bomb raid shelter
This is a favourite self-reflection of Jan Kelly:
Design your personal brand.
Think of an atomic bomb shelter.
Individuals will be required to live here, together in an enclosed space, for the next 50 years!
What qualities will be important for the success of the shelter?
Who would you let in? Would you let you in?!!
Do you possess these qualities? What work do you still need to do?!
What changes or refinements would you like to make about your personal values and the way you relate with those around you?
Have fun!!
Jan Kelly
